I Ching Explanation

By Laila Stein

How can we explain the I Ching?

Even though the I Ching is 3,000 years old, it still has power in the 21st century. And the power does not just extend to China, where it originated. People all over the world, from the east to the west, still study and consult the ancient Chinese oracle system. It is used in psychology, mathematics, and art. How can this be?

First look at the history of the I Ching (Book of Changes).

Developed 3,000 years ago, and rewritten by such respected Chinese figures as Confucious, the I Ching has influenced Eastern thought for millenium. But it is still studied and respected today. And it does not just influence the east any more, but is well regarded by western scientists, business people, and artists today.

Understand the intepretation of the hexagram.

When an asker consults the I Ching, they phrase questions in a way that asks for insight about a particular situation or problem. The answers are direct, but still have to be considered by the asker. So maybe it helps askers to open their minds and consider the questions and answers in a different light. All sorts of people, from doctors to math teachers to artists, have been amazed by the answers.

Some suggest that the person who poses the question already has an idea of the right answer, but they have not considered that answer in a way that makes sense. The I Ching may help them accept the answer they already know is true because it helps them consider it differently.

There are modern uses of this system too.

And even though we always mention that this prediction system is 3,000 years old, we can find it mentioned in documents about science, the arts, and business in recent days. It is even easier now to use the I Ching because we have internet resources to help. Online programs make it much simpler to use this complex system. - 30438
